⚽ Match of the Day

🇹🇷 Fenerbahçe v 🇫🇷 Lyon

The match of the night on Tuesday (18th Aug 2026) in the Champions League qualification final features two UEFA competition mainstays, as Turkish giants Fenerbahçe face off against a well-balanced Lyon side under the lights on a summer night in Istanbul.

In the last round, Lyon saw off Sparta Prague 3-0 at home after losing 2-1 away in Prague (4-2 agg.). Fenerbahçe won both legs in their tie against Austrian league runners-up Sturm Graz, 2-0 at home and 1-0 away (3-0 agg.). Fenerbahçe's league season kicked off this past weekend with relegation survivalists Gençlerbirliği shocking the Istanbul club 2-1 and ruining Fener's start to the season.

Fenerbahçe

The Turkish Süper Lig has been splashing major cash in the summer, with all major clubs inhabiting the great city of Istanbul making jaw-dropping signings that have raised eyebrows across Europe. Fenerbahçe have just brought in talismanic center-forward and Belgium's all-time top goalscorer Romelu Lukaku from Napoli, ex-Manchester United starboy Mason Greenwood from Marseille for around €40m, Nathan Aké from Manchester City, and Vedat Muriqi, who makes a return to the club after five productive seasons at the now-relegated Mallorca in Spain.

Romelu Lukaku Mason Greenwood

Manager İsmail Kartal heavily rotated in the club's loss to Gençlerbirliği over the past weekend, which could have had a serious effect on the result. He had been prioritizing the Champions League, which in all fairness is probably the right choice. The team he fielded was more than good enough to handle their business this past weekend but failed to do so. It's worth noting that one of the goals they conceded was an absolute worldie. But the disconnect between the attack and midfield was the clear issue for Fener in their opening league game, failing to connect through the middle of the field and create any kind of flow. They were also poor defensively in transition. N'Golo Kanté did not start the match, and it was clear his presence was missed in midfield; in Fenerbahçe's 1-0 away win against Sturm Graz the legendary midfielder had 9 tackles, sweeping up behind the midfield and attack. Without him the Fener midfield is too slow with Yüksek and Guendouzi, and can't cover enough ground.

Lukaku has already been named to the bench for his first appearance in a Fenerbahçe shirt, which means it will most likely be Anderson Talisca at center-forward again (he has been on fire to start the season). Mason Greenwood will be reintroduced as a starter after coming on for 30-35 minutes over the weekend, with Turkish international Kerem Aktürkoğlu or Oğuz Aydın on the left. İsmail Kartal has a decision to make in essentially every position except his center-back pairing — Milan Škriniar and Aké, who have played every game together in defense.

Lyon

Lyon have built a great young team with fun and exciting players. In his second full season with the club, Paulo Fonseca will be excited to get to work with his team.

Loïs Openda Paulo Fonseca

Loïs Openda headlines Lyon's summer business. After a failed move to Juventus last season, he makes his return to Ligue 1 — devastatingly quick and a streaky finisher who will score at least 15 goals for Lyon this season.

Build-up is lineup-dependent for Paulo Fonseca's team, either in a 4-3-3 single pivot or a double pivot operating out of a 4-2-3-1. In the 4-3-3, the goalkeeper forms a back three with the center-halves; the single pivot draws players in the opposing press out of position and frees the advanced midfielders as a vertical option for the back three to pass into, thus playing through presses. This build-up and setup was deployed during their 2-1 loss to Sparta Prague.

In the 4-2-3-1 double pivot, the midfielders stay narrow to suck in the opposition press and free up the fullbacks. The double pivot forms triangles with their sided fullbacks and center-halves to pragmatically advance up the field. In the midfield third, the double pivot tends to form triangles with the attackers to free up wide fullbacks again.

In attack the Lyon team is adaptable, starting with the fullbacks, who maintain high and wide positions in the final third — creating space in the half-spaces for their wingers. But the Lyon wingers have the freedom to stay wide and hold width, which allows for underlapping runs from the advanced fullbacks. Wingers also take up central positions for defensive midfielders and center-halves to go long, dragging fullbacks out of position.

Verdict

Lyon are a tight-knit group of young players with great team cohesion, and Paulo Fonseca is building something with them — cementing a club-wide identity on the pitch and in the market. Fenerbahçe are a talented group of individuals who have much more European club experience at the highest level, and a much larger pool of players to pick from.

I believe this tie favors the pragmatism and adaptability of Lyon. Fener showed how disjointed even a talented group can look this past weekend against much weaker opposition. I think Lyon will be well prepared to attack Fener from wide areas and create some confusion with their rotating attackers. There are few personnel decisions Paulo must make compared to his counterpart, who isn't sure what his best 11 looks like.

Bets

In a tie like this I would never bet the result (I rarely do anyway), but as always, PPP has you covered on player props.

Young Belgian Malick Fofana will start off the left for Lyon and is adept at playing inside the channel between the fullbacks and center-backs, attacking his man from wide in 1v1 situations. He had FOUR shots on target (SOT) from his five total shots in the last match against Sparta Prague. He's goal-hunting, and his shooting accuracy seems to have really dialed in. His pace and Fener's poor transition defense will lead to opportunities in favorable positions.

Tyler Morton is arguably Lyon's most important player, and based on how I think they'll set up today, this is a great price. Read his player spotlight here
